Case Study: Tank Wheels
A leading defense contractor contacted D&H Industries to domestically manufacture tank wheels for a continuous track (also known as tank tread and caterpillar track) application produced off-shore. The customer required increased product quality, responsive manufacturing, and reliable delivery. The D&H team developed a manufacturing plan that required the purchase of a 2,000-ton hydraulic press with a large 8' x 10' bed, confirming their commitment to the project. The process includes:
- Buying 20 ton lots of Grade 80 plate directly from the steel mill.
- Thick gauge metal laser cutting using our large-format 6kw Bystronic 2m x 4m laser table, maximizing sheet size with minimal outfall.
- Large blank forming occurs through several deep draw stamping operations as well as mechanical stamping.
- Part production finishes with a few machining operations.
